cruising laminates

getting the most from your sails

Special Instructions for CL and SCL Cruising Laminates.

Your Bainbridge CL sail is built from what we believe to be the ultimate cruising fabric. However special care does need to be taken as these products can be prone to mildew.

What is Mildew?
Mildew is an airborne fungus that will flourish when provided with food, water and shade. Any damp, cool climate is ideal. Typical food sources include pollen and heavy pollution.

Why can Mildew effect Cruise Laminates?
Our cruise laminates do not grow mildew but because they are impermeable to air and water they do retain moisture. When a food source sticks to a CL sail the ideal environment has been created that could result in mildew growing on the food particles.

How to avoid mildew.

  • Store sails in a dry, cool location and do not put away damp.
  • Clean sails regularly including annual washing by your Sailmaker.
  • Do not leave a dirty, damp sail furled for long periods.

How to treat mildew.
In the unlikely event that your CL sail does develop mildew here are some tips.

  • Clean the sail immediately while the mildew is on the surface. Delay will allow it to spread to food imbedded in the fibres.
  • Use a 3% - 5% solution of Calcium Hypochlorite (Swimming Pool Chlorine). Rinse quickly afterwards.
  • Always follow the handling instructions of any chemical cleaner carefully.
