Sailcloth weight is a common
source of confusion for sailors. There are five different methods your Sailmaker or Covermaker
could use to describe the weight of a cloth. When you compare quotes it is important that you
understand what weight of cloth is being suggested.
| 1. |
Sailmaker Ounces (smoz): Weight in ounces of a piece
of cloth 36" x 28.5". The traditional measure of sailcloth weight. |
| 2. |
Grams/ Square Meter (gsm) |
| 3. |
Ounces/Square Yard : Used for marine fabrics such as
Sunbrella® or Dickson®
Type the weight of cloth you have been quoted into the corresponding
box to convert to another unit:

| 4.

Generic Spinnaker Weight :
Traditionally, Spinnaker fabric was given a weight measured before
it was finished. These have been adopted into everyday sailing jargon
to describe a generic band of cloth. So, when you call your bowman
to hoist the half ounce, the cloth actually weighs 0.82 to 0.9 smoz
or 35 to 38 gsm. The chart below shows how these generic weights
relate to finished weight.

| 5. |
Specific Cloth : You may have
been quoted a specific cloth such as Bainbridge Ocean-750. This is
the style name and not an accurate measure of weight. |
In all cases, if you are not clear on what cloth you have been
quoted, contact your Sailmaker.
